Traffic Advisory: M2/ Main Reef and Linked Extensions
Motorists are advised to exercise caution upon approaching the construction widening of the M2 West Highway/ Main Reef Road and linked extensions, as work gets underway on the R30 million upgrade to ease congestion and improve access along the arterial route.
The upgrades entail road widening between Treu Road / Park Drive and Crownwood Road and a dedicated new lane from Church Street up to the M1/M2 Motorway. The project includes traffic signal optimisation from Production Road, Dorado Avenue intersections up to Treu Road/ Park Drive, in Region F, Selby Extensions and Crown City Extensions in Wards 58.
Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) Acting Managing Director, Goodwill Mbatha said: “JRA teams are presently relocating services along the route with no disturbances to traffic. However, we are calling on motorists to exercise caution and reduce their speeds upon entering areas under construction to ensure the safety of JRA teams and contractors who are currently working within trenches along the road reserve. We are appealing to motorists to be vigilant of heavy duty plant and equipment along the route. The project will also include traffic accommodation, stormwater, roadworks, road signs and markings and upgrade of traffic signals.”
This construction of Main Reef Road and its extensions play a critical role in Johannesburg’s road network, in that it links the M1, M2, M7, N1 and R24 which are some of the major freeways forming the backbone of the city’s road network. The flagship project includes a combination of additional lanes, signal optimization and is expected to be completed by 15 December 2017.
