Veld fire affects electricity supply to pumping stations

Media Statement – 19 September 2019

A veld fire was experienced last night – Wednesday: 18 September 2019; as a result the, ESKOM’s Snowden Substation was negatively impacted. The substation supplies 88kV power to Rand Water’s Zuikerbosch Treatment Plant and the Lethabo Pumping Station. This meant that both of Rand Water’s main treatment plants were not able to treat and pump water to the reservoirs. As a result the following Johannesburg Water systems were affected:

  1. South Hill Tower : Linmeyer, Rosana and South hills
  2.  Ennerdale Res : Ennerdale, Lawley, Finetown
  3. HurstHill Reservoirs: Westbury, Hurst Hill, Albertville, Montclare, Northcliff, Parktown, Greenside
  4. Yeoville Reservoir: Linksfield, Kensington, Doornfontein, Jeppestown
  1.  Brixton Reservoir: Mayfair, Pageview, Coronationville, Auckland Park, Johannesburg CBD
  2. Linksfield Reservoir: Linksfield, Kensington, Doornfontein, Jeppestown
  3. Linbro Park Reservoir: Frankenwald, Alexandra, Linbro Park, Modderfontein
  4. Alexander Park Reservoir: Heriotdale, Cleveland, Benrose, Wychwood
  5. Eagles Nest : Southgate, Meredale, Eikenhof, Mondeor, Naturena

Customers are urged to please use water sparingly while we restore the system to normality. Please kindly refrain from using drinking water for gardening, washing of cars and cleaning hard surfaces, filling up of swimming pools as this will shorten the recovery time of reservoirs. Areas which are severely affected will be serviced via mobile water tankers.
