MMC Nonhlanhla Makhuba Easter Safety Message

I take this opportunity to wish everyone safe travels ahead of the Easter long weekend.
High traffic volumes are expected as many will commute to holiday destinations, or visit family and friends located across the country. During this time, Christian church communities such as the ZCC take the long pilgrimage to in Moria in Polokwane.
Every year, the City encourages transport operators to ensure that their vehicles are in good condition, to rest along the journey and to always remember that the lives of those they are transporting are in their hands.
This year, I want to challenge everyone to prioritise their safety and that of their families and friends.
Whether driving or not, always stay alert to your surroundings, take comfort breaks regularly and ensure that personal belongings are kept safe. Travellers should adequately plan for their journeys, always inform a family member or friend of your whereabouts and keep an emergency contact number.
While our biggest challenge remains the high number of road accidents, we need to all work together to ensure that we actively reduce road carnage.
Misdemeanours such as driving under the influence and reckless driving as some motorists don’t adhere to the road rules are some of the contributing factors to our very high accident and fatality rate.
Each motorist and pedestrian has a responsibility to ensure a safe commutes across our communities.
As you enjoy the long weekend, always ensure that children play in safe environments, away from construction sites and incomplete infrastructure, bodies of water and fire.
Remember to always buckle up, avoid using earphones while walking, cycling or driving. Be considerate of pedestrians, cyclists and motorbikes.
To our residents who are part of the Christian community – have a blessed Easter Weekend. A peaceful and wonderful long weekend to those not observing this holiday.
