Invitation to Focus Group Discussion:  Determining the Business Impact of the Labour Relations Act Amendments

Many members will recall the concerns raised by BUSA on the labour law amendments in 2014 as they were not subjected to an impact assessment. We have since managed to secure the support of government and labour to conduct a review of the impact of the assessment of such laws.

BUSA is accordingly participating in the study into the socio-economic impact of the Labour Relations Act Amendments (LRAA) that came into effect in 2015.  The study comprises three discrete research projects including (1) mapping changes in the labour laws (conducted by Halton Cheadle and Paul Benjamin); socio-economic impact of the LRAA (DPRU in conjunction with SBP), and Trade Unions and the LRA (Naledi).

Two focus group discussions, facilitated by SBP, will be held with BUSA members to determine what have been the business impacts of the LRAA – specifically the equal treatment sections 198, 189 and 21 of the Amendment Act – on business operations and employment.

The dates for the two focus group discussions are:

  1. Tuesday, 15 August 2017: 10h00 to 13h00 at BUSA offices (Bentley Office Park, Block 9, 67 Wessel Road, Rivonia, Sandton)
  2. Friday, 18 August  2017: 10h00 to 13h00 at BUSA offices (as above)

Please RSVP to Nomaza Spelman, email: [email protected] indicating which one of the focus group discussion you will attend.

This is a significant research study hence your insights and experiences with regard to the impact of the LRAA on employment and business operations is extremely important.

Looking forward to your participation
